How Often Does a Mini Split Air Filter Need to be Cleaned?

A mini-split air conditioner typically consists of an outdoor heat pump connected via a conduit to an indoor air-handling unit. The outdoor portion is the compressor, which can serve up to eight indoor units. The beauty of this system is that each indoor air handler is independent of the other indoor units and filters the air directly in the room. Therefore, the air filters need to be cleaned regularly, both for health reasons and to improve the efficiency and longevity of the system.

Mini-split systems are typically more expensive than other air conditioning sources; however, they have definite benefits. There is no need for a costly ventilation system, and installation is phenomenally fast. One uniquely timely benefit is the filtration system.

Each air handler has its own temperature control and its own filter. You may have seen a mini-split in a motel room, which allows each guest to control their unit's temperature. A mini-split's beauty is that the air handler also houses a filter, meaning air in individual rooms is filtered solely for that room. For many travelers, leery of airborne viruses like COVID, a mini-split a/c is a great comfort, both in terms of temperature control and the bonus of not 'sharing air' with other guests via air ducts.

The two-week rule

Because of the unique filtration aspects of a mini-split, the air filter needs to be cleaned regularly. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning the air filter of a mini-split every two weeks. Since some units will not be used as frequently as others, their filter may not need to be cleaned as often. However, checking the filter is as simple as shutting off the unit and opening the filter housing panel on the front of the unit.

How to clean the filter

Mini-split air handlers often have more than one filter. If they look dusty or dirty, they can be gently removed for cleaning. Make sure that the unit is off before cleaning. Pay particular attention during the removal as the clean filter will need to be returned to its original position. The easiest way to clean filters is to use the spray attachment on a kitchen faucet and thoroughly rinse away the dust and debris. A faster solution is to use the brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner. Either of these methods should be undertaken with great care not to damage the filter. If water is used, allow the unit to thoroughly dry before returning it to the air handler housing. Return the clean, dry filter to its original position before turning the unit back on.

The homeowner should also take care to keep the area around the outdoor heat pump clean and debris free. Plant material and other foreign objects can inhibit the airflow and lower the system's efficiency.

Professional maintenance

Twice yearly, the mini-split unit should be serviced by an air conditioning service professional. Failure to provide proper maintenance service on the unit, both monthly and professional maintenance, can result in loss of efficiency, safety issues, and damage or failure of a mini-split system, so this maintenance is worthwhile.
