Reasons a Fan Doesn't Work on an Air Conditioner

Since so much air passes through AC units, they need filters to catch and trap all the dirt, dust, etc.

An AC unit is a real life-saver on hot and sticky summer days. Unfortunately, the system will fail if the AC fan stops spinning, leaving homeowners sweaty and uncomfortable.

Here are some possible reasons why AC fans stop functioning properly:

Problems with the power supply

If an AC fan isn't working, it may not get enough energy. There may have been a power cut or a temporary interruption to the power supply. Alternatively, the device might have overloaded, tripping a breaker and cutting power to the unit. This may occur if the AC has been left running for a long time or due to improper installation.

Issues with the capacitors

Capacitors are tiny components, far smaller than the motor, fan, or condenser coils, yet they play a massive role in how the AC unit works. The entire system (fan included) can shut down if a small capacitor breaks down.

A burnt-out motor

AC fans rely on motors to provide the energy they need to spin and promote healthy airflow through the unit. However, even the biggest and best motors have limited lifespans, especially if they haven't been adequately maintained.

A broken belt

Modern AC units don't tend to have belts, but older ones do. The belt spins around at great speed, often under high pressure. Both of which can cause it to buckle and snap. In other situations, it might not snap but could fall away from the housing. In either case, the entire AC, including the fan, may cease to work without a functioning belt.

Compressor contactor troubles

The compressor contactor is another critical element of many AC systems. It is responsible for sending electrical energy to the fan and other components. Just like the belt, motor, and other parts previously mentioned, the contactor can lead to a total breakdown of an AC unit if it wears out.

A clogged or dirty filter

Since so much air passes through AC units, they need filters to catch and trap all the dirt, dust, etc. They can get dirty and clogged over time, preventing air from flowing smoothly across the fan and the unit. If a clogged-up filter isn't changed or cleaned promptly, the system will suffer, which can cause the fan to stop.

Don't get in a spin

There are many possible causes for AC fans to stop spinning, and it can be tricky for homeowners to figure it out themselves. That's why it's best to contact an HVAC pro whenever an AC unit needs repairs or replacement parts. They can figure out what's wrong and get the unit up and running again.
