When to Replace a Residential HVAC System

Repair is sometimes the best course; however, there are times when replacing the heating systems is better and will be more cost-efficient.

When a home’s heating system isn’t working as designed, homeowners dread the repair or replacement expense. Repair is sometimes the best course; however, there are times when replacing the heating systems is better and will be more cost-efficient.

Following are several indications that the system needs to be replaced.

High Electric Bills

One indication that it is time to replace a home’s HVAC system is unexplained, higher than usual electric bills. But, electricity rates aside, if the household’s electrical uses haven’t changed yet the monthly cost of running the household has, there is a good chance that the HVAC system is the culprit. A trustworthy HVAC technician can advise homeowners if this is the case.

System cycling issues

An HVAC system ought to start quickly, but problems that affect the function could occur. If the problem is reasonably simplistic, like a dirty condenser or clogged air filter, an experienced HVAC technician should be able to repair it. However, if the problem is more complicated, the homeowner may consider replacing the system.

Sickness

Carbon monoxide gas is within a heater, but it’s enclosed to ensure that homeowners don’t have to worry about being poisoned by toxic gas. Sometimes, however, heating systems develop carbon monoxide leaks that can cause illness. In the case of a mild leak, headaches and general pain are common. However, if an HVAC technician finds fractures in the furnace heat exchanger, the homeowners must replace the system for the health and safety of the residents.

Constant adjusting

If family members continuously change the thermostat to keep the temperature constant and comfortable, this could indicate a more significant issue. Homeowners can avoid doing anything for a while, but eventually, they will need an experienced HVAC technician to sort out the cause. The problem may lie with the thermostat or may be a bigger problem with the HVAC system itself.

Poor air quality

An HVAC system that no longer maintains moisture levels and cleans the air may need to be replaced. Most people do not realize that while the purpose of an HVAC system is to keep a home comfortable year-round, it does so, in part, by removing the moisture from the air and cleaning it of microscopic particles. Once an HVAC system can no longer perform this function, residents can experience dry eyes, allergies, or asthma attacks due to the dust in the air.

Strange noises

Every HVAC system makes some noise, but it should be the same sounds as it cycles on and off. However, when a system makes unusual sounds not heard before, it is time to have it inspected. An HVAC technician can thoroughly examine and test the HVAC unit to determine the source of the noises and offer a solution, from repair to overhaul to replacement.

Recurring repairs

Most HVAC systems last about fifteen years if the homeowners maintain them. However, they will need to be replaced eventually. One indicator that the HVAC unit has reached the end of its lifespan is if it requires repeated repairs. Most HVAC systems need routine servicing to keep them clean. One that often needs replacement parts and breaks down often may need to be replaced. The homeowner should contact their HVAC specialist to help them determine if it’s time to replace the unit. Sometimes that is the less-expensive option overall.

Homeowners who believe their HVAC systems are failing should contact licensed, well-respected contractors for advice and assistance outlining the best course of action.
