Where is the Air Filter Located on an HVAC System?
Changing the HVAC air filter at least every three months is a must. Doing so prolongs the system’s lifespan while optimizing its performance. Moreover, changing the filter keeps it from clogging while ensuring the electricity it consumes remains low.
Here’s how to find the air filters on an HVAC system:
Different HVAC types and filter locations
In most HVAC systems, the air filter is in the return air duct. However, different systems are available:
Horizontal HVACs: Mostly installed in attics, horizontal systems feature an air filter slot at the back of the unit.
Vertical HVACs: For the most part, vertical HVACs are located in small spaces such as basements. The air filter of vertical HVACs is usually either at the top or bottom of the unit.
Other HVACs: When locating the air filters of other system types, check at the back of the air grill on the ceiling, wall, or utility closet door.
Many HVAC systems feature a return in every room with filters that need replacing.
How to change the air filters in the central HVAC unit
The air filters of the HVAC unit are most likely next to the furnace or the system air handler, which is the metal box containing the motor and fan. Find a 1-inch removable or hinged cover, as it likely reveals the location of the air filter slot. Some systems have larger filters, meaning the slot and its cover are bigger.
The slots can be vertical or horizontal, but the airflow arrows must point toward the unit. If no slot exists on the central HVAC unit, the air filter in the return vents comes into play.
How to change the air filters in the return vents
HVACs have an air handler and duct system with two functions: drawing the air in to clean, heat, or cool it and blowing the now agreeable air back into the house. The point where the air handler meets the return duct is the air filter location.
In larger homes, builders install more than one HVAC, meaning air filters are likely at the air handlers and the return vents. As the HVACs in many dwellings are concealed, the air filters are in the return vents for easy access. Larger than standard, the return vents are either rectangular or square and feature an air filter slot.
How to pull off the cover and change the air filter
The cover comes off easily with a gentle tug. The cover is bolted on some systems but can be removed with a coin. Once the cover is off, replace the old air filter with a new one.
Never underestimate the importance of changing the air filters
Replacing air filters at least every three months will prolong the lifespan of the HVAC while maintaining good air quality in the home. Consult a professional for expert HVAC maintenance.
