Common Heating Issues During Winter

Temperatures drop during winter, and some systems experience issues. Even the most reliable home heating systems are not invincible. Homeowners should be familiar with the most common issues heating systems experience in winter to identify them if they arise and possibly avoid them altogether.

Malfunctioning thermostat

Though small, the thermostat has an important responsibility. Without a properly calibrated and connected thermostat, a heating system cannot function correctly. If the heating system doesn’t turn on when it should or continues to run after it shuts off, there may be an issue with the thermostat. Professionals can diagnose where the source of the problem lies and conduct the proper repairs.

Clogged air filters

If a forced-air heating system shares ductwork with the air conditioning system, such as a standard furnace and AC combination or a heat pump, the air filter must be changed before the heating season begins. The filter can develop clogs from debris in the return air vents over the summer when the air conditioner is running. If the heater tries to work with a clogged filter, it may suffer from low energy efficiency and a plunge in airflow. If there’s a drop in comfort, low airflow from the vents, or a spike in heating bills, first check to see if the filter needs to be changed out or cleaned. Call for repairs if the problems persist.

Failed electronic igniters

Modern furnaces no longer use standing pilot lights to ignite the burners. Instead, they run from electronic ignition systems, such as intermittent pilots and hot surface igniters. These components help make contemporary furnaces safer and more energy efficient. However, the igniters usually wear out before the furnace does and need replacements. If a furnace doesn’t ignite its burners, have technicians replace the igniter.

Difficulty starting the heat pump

If a heat pump is used for heating and cooling, pay attention to problems that may develop after a long summer in cooling mode. If a heat pump struggles to come on and makes clicking noises, it is probably hard to start and should have professional attention before trouble starts with the compressor.

Homeowners should resolve issues with their heating systems quickly, as they ensure comfort in the home during cold winter months. Keep these common problems in mind to identify any issues that may arise, and call a professional at the first sign of trouble to have the issue quickly resolved.
