Maintenance Requirements Before Restarting a Furnace for the Season

Restarting a furnace without routine maintenance could mean increased energy consumption, compromised indoor air quality, or a breakdown in the middle of the season.

The seasonal transition from summer to fall means it is time to shut off the air conditioner and flip the switch on the HVAC system to heat. But before doing so, it is a good idea to perform a few maintenance checks and carry out required repairs to ensure it operates efficiently and keeps the home warm and comfortable when it gets cold outside.

The furnace is the most valuable piece of equipment during the winter. But as it has been sitting idle for the last several months, restarting it without routine maintenance could mean increased energy consumption, compromised indoor air quality, or a breakdown in the middle of the season.

Here are a few furnace maintenance steps to take before turning it on for the season:

Clean the air filter

One of the most crucial things to improve furnace performance, efficiency, and longevity is to change the air filter. Install a new filter before starting the furnace and replace it regularly to keep the indoor air clean and fresh.

Check the thermostat

Switch the thermostat to heating. It is an obvious but easily forgotten step by several homeowners. Ensure the thermostat is effectively communicating with the furnace and functioning correctly.

Check and clean registers and vents

Clean the dust and debris inside the air registers and return vents that may block airflow. Move any furniture or clear away any obstruction that may block the heating vents and prevent the home from properly warming. Avoid storing any item near the furnace as they may pose a fire threat.

Clean the air ducts

Dust and debris accumulation in the ductwork over time can significantly affect the airflow. Get the air ducts cleaned to eliminate contaminants and ensure proper airflow.

Clean off the burner

When the furnace lies unfunctional during the warmer months, the burner accumulates dust and lowers the furnace’s lifespan. Always wipe down the burners and check for rust or other issues before switching on the furnace.

Clean and lubricate the blower motor

The blower is an integral furnace component that requires attention. The blower motor needs oiling every year for smooth operation. Lubricate the bearings and call a professional if the blower makes strange sounds.

Test carbon monoxide detectors

Carbon monoxide leakage can have disastrous consequences. If the home does not already have one, consider installing carbon monoxide, smoke, and radon detectors. Replace the alarm batteries if required, and check the alarms for proper functioning to ensure home safety.

Schedule a professional tune-up

Experts recommend a comprehensive annual furnace tune-up by experienced and licensed professionals before the temperature drops. First, HVAC professionals inspect and test the unit’s components for proper functionality and signs of wear and tear. Then, they clean the furnace, carry out repairs, and replace worn-out parts to avoid any surprises or unexpected breakdowns in the middle of the winter. Preventative furnace maintenance before the season is essential to save money on costly repairs. If required, they can also install a new unit if the existing system is old or inefficient.
